RTLS (Real Time Location Systems)

RTLS (Real Time Location Systems)

Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) are used to automatically identify and track the locations of objects or people in real time. Wireless RTLS tags can be attached to objects, and there are also wearable versions for people. In RTLS systems, fixed reference points are positioned to receive wireless signals from the tags, and the locations of objects and people are determined. Tracking cars on an assembly line, locating pallets in a warehouse, or tracking medical equipment and patients in a hospital are examples of Real-Time Location Systems. Radio Frequency (RF) is generally the primary physical component of RTLS technology. However, in some systems, depending on the need, optical (usually infrared) or acoustic (usually ultrasound) technologies can also be used instead of or in addition to RF.

RTLS Applications can be exemplified as follows:

  • Increasing efficiency by tracking forklift movements in a warehouse
  • Preventing equipment from leaving the factory usage area
  • Making multiple items traceable by tracking the pallet
  • Checking the presence of the correct and necessary number of personnel in the operation area
  • Ensuring personnel safety in the event of an emergency evacuation
  • Optimizing the flow of equipment or high-value assets
  • Preventing products affected by variables such as temperature from being stored in wrong areas
  • Tracking employees or visitors within the factory
  • Creating the fastest and safest routes for assets or workflow within the facility
